Minutes of the St. Croix Government Retirees (SGR) Inc. General Meeting
The SGR meeting was held on May 17th 2016 at the Cast Iron Pot Restaurant and it began at 1 pm and it was chaired by SGR VP Debbie Christopher.

Attendance…Twenty six retirees, active workers and stakeholders attended the meeting.

Minutes…The minutes were read by Abdul R. Ali. Charlotte Morgan made a motion that the minutes be accepted as read. The motion was seconded by Ernestine Canada.

Matters Arising…There were no matters arising from the minutes.

Reports…(SGR VP Debbie Christopher Report) Debbie Christopher reported on National EMS & Police Week and emphasized the need for SGR members to be mindful of the work that these groups undertake on a daily basis. She also read a copy of a letter that she had written many years ago that focused on human suffering and some of the strategies that could be used to address the issue. Following that Christopher then introduced Linda Garvin who made a presentation on healthcare options for seniors.

Presentation by Linda Garvin (Director of St. Croix Senior Collaborative) …Garvin, who has had a forty-five year career as a teacher, outlined some of the options available for seniors in terms of healthcare, assisted living facilities and SkyMed. She made particular reference to seniors losing their balance and falling as a result. She said that courses were being offered to assist those persons who have a fear of falling, and the appropriate action one should take after having fallen. She also emphasized that specific training was available to SGR members, and further, that she was interested in organizing a class at a minimum cost, for what she described, as “Caregivers.” Following the presentation SGR VP Christopher said that she was of the opinion that Human Services was somewhat overwhelmed with the needs of seniors and that the SGR should do whatever it could from a preventive angle to assist the seniors. She went on to say that the SGR would be prepared to partner for’ training purposes’ with the speaker (Linda Garvin) who then proceeded to give out her telephone number 340-690-3002 and her email address garvinlj@gmail.com.

Adjournment… made a motion that the meeting be adjourned and the motion was seconded.
