Minutes of the St. Croix Government Retirees Inc. (SGR) held on Tuesday September 15th 2015 at the Cast Iron Pot Restaurant in Estate Princesse. The meeting began at 1.15 pm and it was chaired by Marv Moorhead , the SGR president.
Attendance ... There were twenty retirees and active stakeholders in attendance at the meeting.
Minutes ... The minutes were read by Abdul R. Ali and following the reading Carmen Moorehead-Mills made a motion that the minutes be accepted with corrections. The motion was seconded by Mavis Hennessey. The vote was unanimous.
Reports (Finance) ... Treasurer Hodge reported that the bank balance as of September 1st 2015 was$ 4689.48. She said that the $137.00 was spent on lunches for the Executive Committee as it prepared for a senate hearing, and that this left a balance of $4552.48. (President's Report) Mary Moorhead reported on the following:-Smart Phones-Moorhead said that a training course was being offered by UVI over the period Nov 17th and Nov 19th 2015 on the use of smart phones. Internet Voting -Moorhead reminded the retirees that the internet voting will commence on October 28th. 2015. HRA-Reference was made to the level of the fine involved ($500 .00) for those who failed to get their HRAs completed by the end of September 2015. Election of Officers -Moorhead reminded the retirees that election s are scheduled to take place in October 2015. Bill No 31-0146 -Moorhead said that the SGR had provided te stimony in front of the 3i5t Legislature on the bill. She also said that handouts that were provided to the senators by Mr. Nibbs of the GERS had also been made available for review by SGR members. Bill 31-0150 Forfeiture of Annuity-Moorhead reported that the hearing of bill (Sponsored by Sen. Gittens) had been postponed until September 24th 2015 at 10.30 am.
Presentation ... Ms. Venitia Horsford, Dido O'Reilly and Chief Luis Santos of the Licensing and Consumer Affairs Office made a meaningful presentation regarding the role and function of the DLCA. In short the presenters indicated that DLCA can handle consumer complaints, cannot take complaints from businesses, regulates businesses, does not set price control and checks on prices of goods during hurricane season. The presenters also advised that it was important for us all to become informed consumers by paying attention to the food prices and by reading food labels before finalizing our purchases. The presenters also said that store policies must be posted in the stores in order for them to have effect. All receipts, the presenters said, should have the name of the company, the date, address, and website information . Following the presentation Mary Moorhead thanked the presenters for their time and effort and she wished the department well in terms of its efforts to ensure that consumers are treated fairly.
Any Other Business ... (Vi Code) Mary Roebuck drew the attention of the meeting participants to the fact that the VI Code is now accessible at the Florence Williams Library.
