Minutes of the St. Croix Government Retirees Inc. (SGR) held on December 16th 2014 at the Charles Harwood Clinic in Christiansted, The meeting was chaired by the (SGR) president, Mary Moorhead and it got on the way at 1.30 pm.
Attendance…Fifteen retirees and stakeholders attended the meeting.
Minutes…Abdul R. Ali read the minutes and Miguel Nico made a motion that they be accepted as read. The motion was then seconded by Mr. G. Doward. The vote was unanimous.
Matters Arising…There were no matters arising from the minutes.
Reports…(Finance) Ms. Hodge, the Treasurer reported that there was a balance of $3912.00 in November 2014. Expenditures since then included $394.00 for (Repeal Act 6906-sections 6 & 8) ads that appeared in the local papers. Hodge said that dues collected recently amounted to $282.00 and that there was a balance of $3799.65 in the account. (GESC Matters) Mary Moorhead raised a number of concerns about the GESC and premium payments that were seemingly due by the end of December 2014. Moorhead urged members to call 718-8588 (Ms. Vanterpool) or 227-4686 (Ms. Joseph) for further information (Laptop) Moorhead said that this was still been addressed. (GERS Meeting) Miguel Nico reported that he attended the November 20th meeting of the GERS Board. He said that the Carambola discount program had been updated and that 8651 (COLA) checks to retirees had been issued based on monies the government received from the VI Lottery. Mention was also made of the GERS’ vote to increase the employee/employer contributions 1% for three years for the employees and a 3% increase for the Government. The increases are expected to begin in January 2015. A problem seemingly exists regarding the PWD drawings relating to Carambola. It would appear that even though the GERS owns Carambola some portions of the land at the resort (as per drawings at PWD) shows an estate of a name other than Carambola. The next GERS Board meeting is set for January 15th 2015 at 10am at the GERS office.
Legislative Pension Taskforce…Mary Moorhead said that there was no update on this matter.
GERS Retiree Representative on the board…Mary Moorhead said that the SGR should forward a list of representatives to the board ASAP and further, that the representation matter would be placed on the agenda for the January meeting.
SGR Lawsuit…It was mentioned that since Governor deJongh was leaving office there were some new questions regarding the SGR law suit. Is the case still valid? This was one of the questions raised.
Any Other Business…Abdul R. Ali said that SGR member Eugenia Brady, had passed on and asked that members send their sympathies to remaining family members. Adelbert Nico thanked the SGR board for its work and Abdul R. Ali thanked Mr. Fahie for sounding the conch shell on a number of occasions.
Adjournment…Debbie Christopher made a motion that the meeting be adjourned and the motion was seconded by Ms. Hodge. The meeting ended at 2.45 pm.
